Zouave Meerschaum Pipe

This particular pipe is one of at least two that were produced to celebrate the end of the Franco-Austrian War (1859). The names of all the battles fought are listed in raised letters circumscribing the stem. There is another bearing a zouave illustrated in Plate XXIV, Dunhill, "The PIpe Book" (1924), described as a Veteran of Crimea. This one depicting another zouave appears in Rapaport, "A Complete Guide to Collecting Antique Pipes" (1979).

This is a close-up of the stem of the previous pipe. Note the date 1859 close to the bone tenon and the names of the battles of Salerno, Magenta and Montebello.
